GNU Social/Mastodon

Given that Zuckerberg is starting Threads to compete with Musk/Twitter, I wondered idly if people would like a microblogging platform that didn't include overhyped billionaires...

That would tend to suggest GNU Social, which I looked into once before. I'm guessing it would be a stand-alone; I don't know of any integration between it and phpBB. But would it be appreciated?

I've moved this out to the main Random Thoughts forum to see what people think.

To clarify a bit: when I mentioned integration, I meant it would not be integrating with phpBB/these forums. It will integrate - or federate - with other GNU Social and Mastodon servers out there, if we would want it to. (That also means the possibility of using phone apps to get to it, which can work just fine - again, if we wanted it.)

UPDATE: This will likely now be Mastodon rather than Gnu Social. Am hoping to have a test server stood up this weekend.

Obviously the test server is not up. Tried that and it just did not work. However! I have discovered a way to do it with some surplus equipment. I'll need to purchase a domain name and make sure I forward things correctly on the router.

So, we hit a good sized bump in the road, but we have another way forward now. Be patient and this may (will?) happen.

ANOTHER UPDATE! Obviously, that didn't work. The server is still here and it is mocking me...I do know how to fix things, but it is a project and that will require time that I do not have right now.

Fortunately, @Saturn, who was formerly Siguza, is back in our lives and has an Akkoma server, which is, for all intents and purposes, exactly like a Mastodon server.

I am trying out Tusky with it on Android and it seems to work just fine. There are several options for iPhone; the best seem to be Toot! and Metatext, but Mammoth also will probably work.
