Dealing with YouTube's nonsense

Post by scooter »

Yes, I am vaguely considering putting some content on YouTube. However, YT's idiocy, with demonetizing, "strikes", and other nonsense is so pervasive and so ridiculous and arbitrary that I'm thinking twice about the whole thing.

Though they're basically a monopoly in terms of content - there are no other places which give you the millions of hits, not that I'm looking for or expecting anywhere near that kind of a fan base - there are a couple of possibilities for evading the worst of their mismanagement.

First, there's Peertube. It's the federated version of YouTube - the same way that Mastodon is the federated Twitter. I can use that as my main "channel" and just copy everything from there to YT. If it gets fucked with by YT's content-gerbils, I can just let them take it down and leave up a pointer to the "real" content.

There's also YouTube Orange, which is an extension on the Chrome browser (and possibly others). The secret to that seems to be that it reads a bit of code you put into the video on YT. If the video comes up normally, no problem. If it doesn't, it will default to Vimeo (or I suppose Peertube, as above). It's an end run around YT's content mismanagement.

Have any of you used or encountered these before, or do you have a preferred way to get around YT fuckery?

Most of my YouTube videos are claimed. I have only had them demonetized or barred from certain countries so far. The big issue for me seems to be copyrighted music but I think I have been dinged slightly for movie clips. What are you considering posting?

Most of what I'm considering is either commentary and editorials, or music. Really, the first few would be a concept to see if I could do something online with Atomic Trivia. I'm concerned about what I've seen from other content creators; there simply seems to be no rhyme or reason behind their actions, and absolutely no accountability. I don't want to censor words or anything like that.

Yeah, music is the one that will get you there with DMCA issues or just demonetization. Not censoring your words may run you afoul of the dreaded algorithm but that thing is hard to understand on a good day.

The thing I have seen, though, is that there is some content which is clearly meant to entrap children that is left alone by that algorithm, whereas you get demonetized for saying words like "massacre", or taken down completely for posting a staged video of a fight between guys in cartoon mascot suits. It's completely arbitrary. I suppose I don't have as much to fear if I'm not counting on the monetization, but I'm against buying into such a system in the first place.

The algorithm is something that makes very little sense and has been a thorn in the side of YouTube content creators for a long time. Many have moved to Twitch in order to avoid some of it but that is a live streaming service that is not one and one with what YouTube provides.

We have an update on this topic, and I must admit I did not expect this:

I am not convinced that all is well in YT-land, but I think this was an attempt at customer service at the very least. It remains to be seen how it will play out ultimately, but it's positive that there was even this step taken.

I have resurrected this thread from the grave to let you know that I'm now on Odysee - https://odysee.com - as well as YT.

Odysee looks like...well, YT. Hopefully more cool as far as the content policing. Discovered it when a video from Eudoxia Mysteries got age-restricted -- in a 5 minute judgment, even though it was 20 minutes long. He's on Odysee now as a "temporary solution"; we will see how temporary it might be, as well as how Odysee handles their monitoring.

Eudoxia, btw, is an interesting channel. I haven't subscribed because frankly, I find it creepy sometimes - which is kind of the idea, as it deliberately posts disturbing and creepy content from around the Internet. :cthulhu:
