I think we may need a new word or phrase in English to mean "I don't care" - but not to have the dismissive secondary meaning behind it. There needs to be a way to express a more benign way of allowing someone else to be what they want to be or do what they want to do without feeling any need to interject one's self into the matter at all. It's not even "allowing", really, because it isn't a matter of permission, but it's a conscious and affirming decision to simply acknowledge someone else's life in a passive way, by continuing with your own...recognizing another's path and establishing a reciprocity between theirs and yours.
