The basic upshot:

Have backups for systems
Upgrade when you need to
Don't introduce single points of failure
Don't let beancounters run your ops department into the ground because "you guys aren't making us money anyway"

I saw a lot of this in person. My Christmas Day flight did not happen as planned. It was absolute chaos.
