Okay, you are basically right in the thick of that particular biz, given the intersection of law and religion: what's the chance they get away with it?

Likely they get away with it. As the article states, they will still have to pay out to victims as directed by a bankruptcy judge but this prevents any new lawsuits and allows them to shuffle around assets to lessen the impact on their bottom line. I'm not super versed on bankruptcy laws but they should not be able to fully wipe away the damages they owe.
