Tangerine Dream and trains

Post by scooter »

It's been mentioned here before that there seems to be a connection between trains and the music of Tangerine Dream. "Love on a Real Train" from Risky Business is the obvious manifestation of this, but there might be an overall association through the genre; keep in mind that Kraftwerk really broke out with Trans-Europe Express. Perhaps there is an echo of the rhythm of trains going over rails in the sequencer sound, which has carried on to the present day as electronic equipment has gotten more sophisticated.

Anyway, this YouTube guy takes the name of a TD album and shows trips through Japan's rail system set to music of the genre. It's wonderfully evocative, and his camera work is great - I'm amazed that they come out so clear.

From a public works standpoint, it also provokes a somewhat wistful feeling to see a country where the transportation system works so well.

Here's the latest from Rubycon on YT. It's not all TD; this one has a vocal pop vibe.

This one just dropped about half an hour ago. A look at one of the few operating top-railed monorails out there. Amazing how it performs around those curves.

The TD track is something from their time in Seattle, I'm pretty sure.

ETA: I'm right. It's the last of the Seattle albums, in 1995 - "Virtually Fields", a composition from Jerome before the Millenium releases where Edgar started to get the six-piece band together.

So, rubycon's latest videos have used the Tangram album as background - because I mentioned it was my favorite album. I'm really honored! :coolthumb:

It should be noted that this isn't the only set of videos out there to combine Tangerine Dream and trains.

@rubycon is now here on The Boardwalk - konnichiwa! - and confirms that the singer here is A-Mei. Do @RhystaRose or @Glitter know that singer?

I do not. Most of the singers I've come across are the actors singing their own show themes (or other people singing the show themes.

The 3 I'm most familiar with are:

Liu Yuning - who got his start singing themes and has moved into acting and doing a fabulous job of it. He's done themes for at least 6 of the shows I've seen. Though I haven't watched this one, here's his singing for one of the most popular high fantasy series in the recent years. This is not the official vid for the song....

Zhu Yilong - who is an accomplished actor and I followed from Guardian (a BL drama) to the Tomb stuff. He's the main person I picture of all the actors who played the character.

Xiao Zhan - started off in a boy band and became an actor (constantly voted one of the most handsome actors in China). He hit it big starring in the Untamed.

Honorable mention to Xueran Chen who does 2 of my absolute favorites - the theme from Guardian in English and the theme for one of the Tomb shows

sir, that's my emotional support long haired male character
