The Drinkin' Buddy

Fallout 4 is set in post-apocalyptic Massachusetts so it was only a matter of time before I was sent on a quest taking place in an Irish pub. While clearing out psychotic raiders in The Shamrock Taphouse, I found this guy in the basement and activated him. I also read a little about him based on his in-game creator's notes. He's a jolly fellow. He is basically a walking microbrewery. When I found him he informed me that he was intended to be delivered to a nearby hotel. As I escorted him over there, he kept my character supplied with ice-cold brews. You can also feed him recipes and he will be able to make that beer. The local beer of Boston in 2287 is Gwinett which has a Southie Stout, Peabody Pilsner, Ded Redcoat Ale, Pale Ale, Blackened Victory Lager, and Bunker Hill Brew.

It's funny because in the real world, I am not much of a drinker but I have been fascinated by the various drinks in the wasteland of the Fallout franchise. The writers put a lot of work into developing the world and that included various options for alcohol. Some of it is leftover from the time before the bombs fell and some of it has been brewed by survivors more recently. The recently brewed stuff shows the desperation drinkers have developed without major production facilities. Brewing ingredients like nuclear material, "salient green", tick blood, and lead do not inspire confidence. The possible future of Fallout even created its own version of FourLoko called Nuka-Cola Dark.

There are many brands of alcohol that you can drink or sell. Prior to Fallout 3, alcohol simply reduced the perception stat. The current effect of alcohol is +1 strength, +1 charisma, and -1 intelligence. Various varieties can have their own specific side effects. Unlike many non-alcoholic drinks such as Nuka-Cola and Sunset Sarsaparilla and water, alcoholic drinks do not heal your HP. Like most consumables, alcohol is irradiated, and consuming it adds to your radiation counter.

Greg has done several episodes on Fallout drinks on How to Drink; in addition to this one, there's the Stimpak Shot and actual sarsaparilla, among others.

This has been another bit of brain shrapnel from...
