Psybient

Post by scooter »

Been getting into this some lately. As the name suggests, it's "psychedelic ambient", which means it's dense with textures and sounds and often has a good beat to it while still remaining in the background. Perhaps the best I've heard recently has been Carbon Based Lifeforms, though some of the stuff I was getting into like State Azure and 2814 could fit into this category as well. (Great names in this genre. And the fans are almost all very cool people.) Currently getting spun is 2016's Between Continents by Unusual Cosmic Process and I am really liking this. Very dreamy and drone-y, but with a slow funk groove that layers on top...you could do a really wild interpretive bump 'n' grind to this.

Latest find has been Astronaut Ape. Great name, great logo, some pretty amazing music. One-man show, as most of these acts are; he's from Moscow but seems to do a lot of online radio appearances (perhaps detailed in a future post on that forum).

AA tends to be a bit more driving and dance-y than other psybient acts while avoiding most of the full-out dub and Goa trance cliches which reached their heyday fifteen or so years ago; you're going to get something other than thupp-thupp-thupp at the standard 130bpm.

Haven't yet heard his latest, which is a collaboration with Translippers, whom I do not know. I'm working my way through the back catalog.

Definitely check this out:

Hm, "Flight 420"...I wonder what it's about... ;)

This is how to perform a psybient track. First, you need a cat.

The cat is supervising. He approves of the work performance but has declined the request for a raise.

Now I want to wave an unruly cat over a theremin and see how that sounds.

It would probably sound like an unruly cat.
As most theremins do. @CrazyCraftLady points out that Narya - Stefan Torto's cat - is far from unruly...

Even more chill than the music.
