How do you listen?

It's come to me, through experience, particularly with the quizzes, that I don't really listen to music in the same way that most people do.

When I hear a good song, I'll definitely get my groove on to it, whatever that may be, but I'll also latch onto the things I like about it - the lyrics, the melody, the instrumentation, something. I want to know all about it: what those words are, who wrote it, what else did this band do, what color of hat the bassist was wearing, etc. I will seek out more from them whenever I can, or find things with a similar sound.

It kind of blows my mind when people listen to music but don't know the words, don't know who's singing, don't know the verses. It seems like they only actually listen to little seven-note hooks or a few phrases that are high in the mix so they are easily understood.

It's difficult, because I love music, but it's sort of an alienating experience when everyone seems to be hearing something different from you.

I listen much the same as you do. Also, as a former sound designer, I tend to think about the context I am hearing the song in and how I might want to use the song later. Of course, I'm sure you're thinking about that with the quiz. I save things in little playlists for future projects a lot.

Usually I just get down to the music, to be honest. Using it in a quiz is an afterthought. But of course, music evokes a whole bunch of feels, and that is something that always sticks with me.

Another instance of this: going to an 80s karaoke night and singing actual songs from the 80s which no one pays attention to, because they haven't been remade or rediscovered in the intervening years. And the audience was old enough to remember them, for the most part.

Of course, don't get me started on the groups (in many cases) who got up there and didn't know any part of the song except maybe the chorus. There were multiple instances of this happening. :wtfsign:
