The whole easy listening vocal genre of the 60s and 70s is just...strange. The idea was to blend into the background, the same as ambient - but the difference was, you couldn't explicitly try to do so. You had to have vocals, you had to have strings, and in order to be "acceptable", the song choices had to be of specifically well-worn tracks in the Great American Songbook...you've heard them all before, so they can't stand out in any way.
It really is an interesting task to find music like that. When I used to pick the music for pre-show and intermission, I had to pick songs that fit the tone but were not intrusive. It's an interesting balancing act. At those points, I was thankful for the existence of artists who were the musical equivalent of static.
