Re: Yacht Rock

Okay...YR is defined by song and not by artist, so this list isn't completely accurate and leaves off a lot of one-hit trips to the Yacht (Randy Vanwarmer or Maria Muldaur, anyone?), but by my expert calculations, the following are Yacht Rock:
  • 10cc
  • Ace
  • Air Supply
  • Airplay
  • Al Jarreau ("Yacht Soul")
  • Al Stewart
  • Alan Parsons Project
  • Ambrosia
  • America
  • Atlanta Rhythm Section
  • Bee Gees (any post-1973 non-disco: "How Deep Is Your Love", Samantha Sang's "Emotion", "Spirits Having Flown"...)
  • Billy Ocean
  • Bob Welch
  • Boz Scaggs
  • Bread
  • Chicago (later, non-jazz, Peter Cetera period)
  • Christopher Cross
  • Chuck Mangione
  • Climax Blues Band
  • Culture Club (controversial inclusion of 80s New Romantic artists! OMD, Spandau Ballet, ABC...?)
  • Dan Fogelburg
  • Dobie Gray
  • Dr. Hook
  • England Dan and John Ford Coley
  • Firefall
  • Fleetwood Mac (classic Buckingham-Nicks period; also Bob Welch period before that, but no further back)
  • Gary Wright
  • George Benson ("smooth jazz" also a controversial inclusion; Kenny G, f'rex, is generally excluded from the Yacht)
  • Gerry Rafferty
  • Gino Vanelli
  • Hall & Oates
  • Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds
  • Herb Alpert
  • Jackson Browne
  • James Ingram (most songs, especially duets)
  • Jay Ferguson
  • Jefferson Starship (The Earth album and Marty Balin-influenced stuff only)
  • Jimmy Buffett (very controversial! Definitely on a yacht...but is he his own genre?)
  • John Stewart (no, not the guy from the Daily Show -- or the black Green Lantern)
  • John Waite (and The Babys, to a lesser extent)
  • Kenny Loggins (The Crown Prince of Yacht Rock; includes all of Loggins & Messina)
  • Leo Sayer
  • Lionel Richie
  • Little River Band
  • Michael Jackson ("Human Nature" only)
  • Michael McDonald (Reigning King of Yacht Rock; if he appears on a song, it is automatically Yacht Rock)
  • Nicolette Larson
  • Pablo Cruise
  • Pages
  • Paul Davis
  • Paul Simon (much of the catalogue)
  • Peter Frampton (most of his catalogue isn't, actually, but the stuff that got played on the radio was: "Show Me the Way", "Baby, I Love Your Way")
  • Phoebe Snow
  • Player
  • Poco
  • Richard Marx
  • Robbie Dupree
  • Roger Voudouris
  • Rupert Holmes
  • Sanford-Townsend Band (rule of thumb: if it's of the construction "[name]-[name] Band", it's Yacht Rock)
  • Seals & Crofts
  • Simply Red (blue-eyed soul, New Romantic...YMMV)
  • Steely Dan (absolute must; Aja is considered the defining Yacht Rock album)
  • Stephen Bishop
  • The Commodores (just before Richie launched the solo career: "Easy", "Sail On")
  • The Doobie Brothers (The Michael McDonald Rule applies...Tom Johnston songs do not)
  • The Eagles (of course)
  • Toto

I heard an Earl Klugh instrumental jazz piece on Yacht Rock Miami yesterday! I think I may have been the only person listening who knew who he was, and I definitely don't know his stuff well at all...

Wow...Franke Previte was just on Yacht Rock Miami promoting his charity work to help musicians. He wrote "I've Had the Time of My Life" and was the Franke in Franke and the Knockouts, which was a yachtish singing group which had one minor hit in the 1980s - I think it was called "Sweetheart". He's got a site for his charity, https://www.oneworldoursong.com/ Thought I would pass it along.

it's considered marina rock. not smooth enough.
I’d certainly play it on my yacht!

We would need to get a yacht first...

The judgment of what is yacht rock ain't easy. I have my disputes with the Yacht or Nyacht? List myself. Sometimes it is just a question of AESTHETIC. I mean, despite all smoothness, Kenny G will never get on the yacht, as an example.

Agreed. Kenny G is smooth jazz. He has the smooth part down but lacks the yacht and the rock.
