Why is Kirk looking at Ken like he's a bold new fronteir?

I am not certain that would be where no man has gone before.

My best shot at Kane Thalek. As you can see, he has facial scales that look a bit like plates.

I was going to post this to fiction, but because I don't have a handle on the NPC voices (yet) I decided not to turn it into a full scene.

Rozeire Esmail was ridiculously over prepared for the meeting. He hadn't cared so much about how he came across since before he'd entered Starfleet. Probably not since the Symbiosis Commission. Certainly not when he had defended his first thesis (although he had made some effort not to be a cocky asshat). This time, he found himself working like hell to avoid being horribly earnest.

It was his first command, so it deserved to be taken seriously. It was important to him that he be more than an acceptable department head. He wanted to be a mentor to his crew. Damnit, they all had serious talent and potential, it took that to get into Starfleet. But not everyone who came in with talent and potential lived up to that, and it was important to him that these scientists flourished. But he was pretty sure that if he came in all seriousness, chain-of-command and This-is-Starfleet they'd never buy in (it's a five man department, plus one half time crewman) - he certainly wouldn't have in their shoes.

So he'd put a lot of thought and effort into the 'first impression', something he rarely did. He'd set a time for the meeting, and very carefully arrived just 7 minutes before the start time. He'd made sure there was some food and beverages, to avoid it being too formal. That actually became a little rabbit hole to fall down. He chose to use that standard ship's dishes and flatware, but set up the service in a fashion as close to his homeworld's as that could accommodate. Obviously, people could replicate what food they chose, but he decided that providing a selection of pastries, one or two from each of the team members' homeworlds, would be best. Jimi, of course, would be the outlier there, but he did the best he could with the information in the ship's databanks. The process of food preparation (such as it was) and preparation was, as always, calming and enjoyable.

He was pleasantly surprised to find that no-one arrived late*. That part went well.

Then the awkwardness began. He could hear himself being just a little to forced with his 'at ease' to Tomar and Tanaka. He winced inwardly at his own mini speech (had he actually said he wanted them to 'grow into a close knit team'? Who talks like that? Never mind, just go on with it...)

He hit all the points he had wanted to. The department was small, true, but it was a sizeable percentage of the ship's crew. Every one of them had a wide range of talents, and two of them, Dalaria and Kandis, have explicit assignments outside the department as well as in it. Implicitly, Tomar, with his biochemistry background, as well as Tanaka and Jimi, the lab techs, might reasonably expect to support the medical team from time to time.

Having said that, there was still likely to be a fair amount of 'down time' in the department. He wanted them to take advantage of that, and expected each of them to come up with a professional development plan, which he would want regular updates on. He then detailed their first assignments and regular duties (nothing unexpected here, but details will have to wait on Steve)

All in all, Rozeire thought it went fairly well. He wasn't sure if Kandis was mocking him or not, but in some ways that was a good thing. The last thing he wanted was to turn into a self-important godling who thought he was more important than his crew... There were too many of those in the world already.

*unless Jill calls it that Dalaria would come in late.

i think star trek should write an in universe reason why some series don’t have swearing and some do. make it a universal translator glitch or something.

the captain of each ship can turn the swears on or off when they want to

Kirk would have kept the swears on but any ship carrying Dr. Leonard McCoy is required by Starfleet regulations to turn them off

Um...

Option 2 does not sound more efficient, or fun, or even cooler.
There's gotta be a better version of this meme.
