New superhero character

Post by scooter »

So I had a superhero character just arrive fully-formed in my brainpan late last night.

I was watching a YT video on "Best Entrances by Marvel Heroes". Stark was on the list with his "Shoot to Thrill" entrance, and Thor at the Rainbow Bridge in Ragnarok, but the top entrance was of course everyone coming back in Endgame. And as I'm watching the epic charge against Thanos's army, I'm watching characters march, run, fly, stomp, web-sling across the screen...I think there might have even been a few vehicles of some kind as well. But I didn't notice anybody bouncing. (The Hulk jumps around a lot, but I'm pretty sure he was running and not jumping in this scene.) And I thought, "Hm...what if someone was bouncing into combat with them? How would that guy have gotten there?"

So what we have is a classic eccentric inventor. :science: Brilliant and resourceful, but a bit aged and a bit nerdy. He's not Tony Stark or Hank Pym or Reed Richards...he doesn't have the fame or the money, and he's nowhere near as polished, but he's still brave, empathetic, and very smart. He's the dad of some young'uns who may have used his devices (or had their own powers or something) and have gone off to start their own superheroing. And he's thinking, what can I do?

By dumb luck, the dad manages to get hold of some vibranium or such - a very small amount. But from his calculations, if he works it into a suit of (powered?) armor or exoskeleton he was tinkering with in his backyard shed-turned-into-a-lab, he can get it to fly. Iron Man, look out.

So he builds it and...it fails. Miserably. Won't get more than a few feet off the ground. In tears and in disgust, he rips the boots off the armor and tosses them into the corner of his lab.

...and they proceed to ricochet all over the lab, knocking over all his equipment. Cut to slow rise from behind a table, wide-eyed. Eureka moment. The boots, and the armor, will get off the ground, pretty high and pretty fast - if you provide periodic kinetic energy. In other words, you have to jump.

Fast forward to: the kids are in trouble, the heroes are up against it, super-goons are a-makin' speeches, nobody knows where the gaddamned Infinity Stones are...it don't look good, folks. And suddenly, from just off-camera, there's an audible power-up whine. And in walks our scientist-dad in a fairly clunky-looking super-suit. Before the bad guys get time to complete their first laugh, he proceeds to bounce all over the place, knocking the villains down like bowling pins, creating havoc, and saving the day.

The video was talking about the use of music in these entrances, like "Shoot to Thrill" and "Immigrant Song"...so I was thinking of a bouncy (har-har) techno or electronic song that this guy could use. Maybe some Daft Punk. I was considering "Watch Us Work It" by Devo. I wonder if that would...oh, wait a minute! Duh!!

In Champions terms: high INT, small gadget pool, Armor, lots of Superleap and Running, levels in Dodge, Move-By, and Move-Through.

I'm considering the name Doctor Rebound.

Reminds me of a mix of Leap Frog/Frog-man and Speedball. Neat!

Yeah, I remember Speedball, but I was thinking more like a good character. :P The other name that comes to mind, and is a very good character although he's a villain, is Batroc the Leaper.

I will say that at some point I need to use "Watch Us Work It" as a superhero theme song or a darts walk-on song. Something other than a commercial for Dell.

Every day I listen to songs and imagine them as pro-wrestling entrance themes.
