Interesting. Australia is proposing a law that would require Facebook and Google to compensate local media for linking to their news articles. In turn, Google is threatening to remove access to their services. Anyone following the news might remember that this isn't a new move for Google. A 2018 article from The Guardian reminds us that "the last time a government attempted to charge Google for links, in 2014 in Spain, the company responded by shutting down Google News in the country."

Sure enough, if you try to access news.google.es you are met with a message that says:
Due to Spanish law, we are sorry to inform you that Google News has closed in Spain and Spanish publishers cannot include its content in this product.

We understand the discontent of readers, so we want to explain the reasons that have led us to make this decision.
Who do you think is right in this fight? :)

I'm not exactly sure. On one hand, it's true - as Tim Berners-Lee has pointed out - that charging for links goes against the whole idea of the Web as it was designed, and the underlying beliefs that information should be (and wants to be) free. On the other, there's little doubt that we've gotten away from that ideal, and one large reason has been tech monopolies such as Google and their frankly anti-competitive practices.

Both are trying to control the Internet, and neither should be doing so.

Looks like a partial cave-in on the issue: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-56410335

Of course the beneficiary is Murdoch, who is a complete horse's ass, and this whole "law" was probably pushed by his conservative allies in Parliament. Smaller news outlets will continue to get shafted as before.
