DO NOT UPDATE Windows 10

Post by Atlantic »

[This information is current as of 12 March 2021 at 1800 UTC, or 1pm Eastern time. Please check the rest of the updates on this thread as this is an ongoing issue.]

Microsoft has recently issued an advisory to all systems running Windows 10 to upgrade to a new version, as the old version is ending its service life. However, Atlantic is advising all customers NOT to update systems at this time. There is a prevalent bug in this new update which is causing crashes to the OS when accessing certain printers. Kyocera, Ricoh, and Zebra printers are known to be affected; it is unknown whether other printers will cause the issues.

Microsoft is investigating the issue. No timetable for repair has been released.

If you have installed this update, Atlantic advises that you roll back to the previous version. Please contact us for information on how to do this.

Please continue to check in often for updates from Atlantic.

UPDATE: Dymo printers may also exhibit this bug. Atlantic's tests on Canon and HP printers with the patch in place have not reproduced the problem, but we are continuing to recommend that no one install the update at this time.

UPDATE (Saturday, March 13, 5pm East)

Epson printers have been tested good.

Microsoft now has a workaround listed for the bug, but this is not recommended for non-expert users. Please contact Atlantic if you are experiencing issues with the new Windows 10 patch. Microsoft has also issued a statement saying that they expect to have a corrected patch for this issue during this coming week (so before 20 March).

UPDATE (Monday, March 15, 8pm EDT)

About three hours ago, Microsoft announced an optional update that is supposed to fix the printing/blue-screen issue in Windows 10.

This is not part of the usual security update track for Win 10 and will have to be installed separately. Please contact Atlantic for assistance in upgrading if you have any questions concerning installation.

It looks like this is as official as it gets, and this appears to fix the problem. We are recommending that this patch be applied for all Windows 10 systems. Please contact Atlantic right away if you have any questions regarding this patch, or require any assistance.
